NU soccer avenges early loss

The Nevada Union boys soccer team managed to shake of the cobwebs of a two-week layoff and beat a team that had handed the Miners a tough early season loss.

Del Oro played and even match with NU, but a deflected corner kick from Marc Hokinson two minutes into the second half was sliced in the back of the net by Ryan Schwendeman for the game-ending score, 1-0.

The Miners avenged a Sept. 21 loss to the Golden Eagles, in which NU was on the ugly side of a 6-0 shutout. And with NU on school break this week, the Miners were short-handed by four players, albeit some missing due to injury.

That didn’t stop a great defensive effort.

Andy Morgan, Garson Graham, Dan Rodriquez and Ceilidh Baxter might’ve had the best collective performance as a unit on the season, said NU coach Mikie Voss.

And at the same time, Christian Grapel, Shawn Lee, Corey Mortara and Chris McCormack played well in the midfield.

Galen Fraser, Dan Volpi and Mark Oparski put pressure on Del Oro’s defense for most of the evening.

“It truly was a team effort,” Voss said in an e-mail.

The Miners are 6-9-1 overall and 2-6 in the Sierra Foothill League. They host Oakmont on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

JV: Del Oro 4, NU 3

Jacob Kirishian scored two goals and Ryan Cain added a third but it wasn’t enough to beat the Golden Eagles as the Miners lost, 4-3.
