NU perfect at all levels

Nevada Union’s football program is clicking on all levels.

With the freshman team’s 45-12 win over Del Campo Thursday, the Miners remain unbeaten at the freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels of play.

“Greg Brown and the freshman staff have done a marvelous job, and Chris Buti and his staff have done a great job,” NU varsity coach Dave Humphers said. “They had some challenges early on, and they have really picked it up.”

Humphers said the chemistry of the coaching staffs can be as important as the chemistry exhibited by the players.

“Our varsity staff, about half of which is new, are really learning fast and communicating well with the kids,” Humphers said. “In the intensity of a football game Friday night, the staff has to be able to communicate and be ready to make adjustments.”

NU’s freshman rushed for 340 yards in Thursday’s preseason victory, led by Doug Potter, who totalled 112 yards and one touchdown run, and Brendan Rochford, who added two more rushing scores. Ian Taylor and Andrew Moon also scored on the ground, while quarterback Tyler Smith threw two scoring strikes to Josh Noxon.

“The offensive line of Vince Ghiringhelli, Alan Barros, Sean Johnson, Zac Callas, Andrew Jackson and Mike Apple were outstanding,” Brown said. “The secondary of Kevin Nelson, James Brindley and Scott Baldwin completely stymied Del Campo’s West Coast offense.”
