NU nabs ninth on the hill

Nevada Union’s ski team concluded its season Wednesday by finishing a combined ninth out of 39 teams at the state competition at Mammoth Lakes Wednesday.

NU alpine ski coach Ken Ramirez estimated that 120 boys and 100 girls competed in the state event. Last year, the Miners finished fourth as a team.

The girls team, which placed fourth Wednesday, was led by Alice Miller, who placed eighth in the giant slalom, 10th in the slalom and seventh overall. Shawna Schobert was 17th in the slalom and 28th in the giant slalom. Jill Collins took 32nd in the slalom, 38th in the giant slalom, while teammate Claire Miller was 36th in the giant slalom. Sarah Callaham was 38th in slalom, and Hilary Barsby was 51st.

“The kids did awesome,” Ramirez said. “The slalom was run in a full on blizzard, and a lot of girls lost their skis, but ours stayed on their feet.”

Senior Julian Crouch led the boys by placing sixth in the slalom, 35th in giant slalom. Miner teammate Nick Nowak was 38th in giant slalom. Matt Freitas was 46th in slalom, Ben Ellsworth was 71st.
