NU Miners finish with a flourish

A long layoff from pounding the hardwood cost the Nevada Union boys basketball team a shot at the San Leandro Tournament title, but the Miners fought back in the losers bracket to win the consolation championship.

“Coming off a 12-day break was tough to swallow,” said NU coach Jeff Dellis. “We had just won a tournament, but with the time off we were rusty.”

The Miners fell to Northgate in the opening game of the tourney, 60-38.

They bounced back to beat St. Elizabeth, 73-59, then James Logan, 65-52.

“We righted the ship,” said Dellis.

NU’s Tony Parilo was the team leader for the tourney. He was named to the all-tourney team.

“In addition to scoring 20-plus points a night, he got people involved. That’s the sign of a good player,” said Dellis.

Doug Black, Cole Cooper and John Sheets also had strong showings for the Miners.
