NU grad aids UCLA in victory
Here’s a look at how some athletes with local ties fared recently at the college level:
Erik Flores (Nevada Union, ’05); University of California, Los Angeles – Flores helped the Bruins to victory Tuesday at the Pac-10/Big Ten Challenge in Bandon, Ore.
With an 11-over-par, three-day total of 224, Flores tied with teammate Kevin Chappell for fifth place individually.
The Bruins totaled 885 to edge USC (890) by five strokes, while Wisconsin finished third (894), Northwestern took fourth (898), and Stanford finished at 900 for fifth place.
Christina Stockton (Forest Lake Christian, ’06); The University of San Francisco – Stockton led the Dons to their first tournament win of the season Wednesday, as USF combined for a final round of 298 to take the Kent Youel Invitational title in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Stockton shot a final round of 1-under-par 71 to finish in a fifth-place tie individually at 225 (78, 76, 71).
Josh Noxon (Nevada Union, ’06); Yuba Community College – Noxon caught his second touchdown of the season Saturday as Yuba defeated Mendocino 35-6. Noxon finished with a pair of catches for 22 yards.
Keith Marin (Bear River, ’03); Menlo College (Atherton) – Marin caught three passes for 48 yards in a 21-3 loss Saturday to Linfield.
Courtney Paquin (Nevada Union, ’05); Belmont Abbey College (Belmont, North Carolina) Ð Paquin played Saturday as Belmont Abbey beat Queens 1-0 for the CVAC championship.
Leigh Collins (Nevada Union, ’06); Biola University – Collins played 109 minutes Thursday as Biola beat Hope International 1-0 in double overtime. Collins played all 90 minutes Tuesday in a 1-0 win against Point Loma Nazarene.
MacKenzie Murphy (Nevada Union, ’03); Montana – Murphy took one shot in 36 minutes of play Friday as Montana fell 3-1 at Gonzaga.
Lauren Zealear (Nevada Union, ’03); Santa Clara – Zealear played 63 minutes Sunday at the No. 4 Broncos recorded a 4-0 home win against the University of San Francisco.
Ali Daley (Nevada Union, ’05); UCLA – Daley knocked in four kills, five digs and an ace Friday as Washington’s Huskies (19-3 overall, 9-2 Pac-10) handed the Bruins (22-2 overall, 9-2 Pac-10) their second loss of the season.
Brynne Edwards (Forest Lake Christian, ’03); The Master’s College in Santa Clarita – Edwards finished with a team-high 13 kills Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Azusa Pacific. Edwards finished with seven digs in a 3-0 loss Tuesday to California Baptist.
Nicole Williams (Nevada Union, ’06); Morgan State University – Williams finished with a team-high 47 assists and a career-high three kills Wednesday in a 3-1 loss to St. Francis.
Luke Manuel (Nevada Union, ’06); Purdue University – In his first college tournament, the Lindenwood University Open, Manuel finished third of 24 wrestlers by going 4-1 with one pin and a major decision.
