The Nevada Union mountain bike team participated in the season’s second NorCal Mountain Bike League Division I race last weekend.

The “Granite Bay Grinder,” as it’s called, lived up to its name with unseasonable 80 degree weather for Saturday’s race.

Some riders amongst several teams had issues with cramping and heat exhaustion but two Miners were able to overcome the conditions and not only pull out wins in both the girls and boys sophomore races but came away wearing the leaders jerseys.

In another strong showing sophomore Keegan Zetterberg took the first place medal and sophomore Sarah Brennan did likewise leaving both as overall points leaders in their respective categories.

Sophomore Casey Fites-Kaufman joined them in the medal group with a fourth place showing.

NU’s team had three other riders with top-10 finishes. Sophomore Sage Byers-Godwin was just off the podium with a solid effort to take sixth place. Junior Liam Ruff, Nevada Union’s only boys varsity rider this season and junior Louisa Sussman, riding in girls junior varsity; both grabbed the 10th spot in their categories.

The Miners’ next race is at Laguna Seca in Monterey March 29.
