‘Nitro Nick’ wins again

Deer Creek Elementary School fourth-grader “Nitro” Nick Sommers traveled to Atwater for the seventh race of the karting championship series.

Though he’d never before raced the track , Sommers sped to the top qualifying spot, won his heat race and then capped his day by taking the checkered flag in the main event, as well.

Sommers is the youngest driver in his karting division.



Placerville Speedway

Pacific Sprints




Colfax’s Colby Wiesz raced to first place in the main event of Saturday’s A feature of the Pacific Sprints at Placerville Speedway.

The win, which followed up a second-place showing in his heat qualifier, pushed him well into the lead of the drivers standings race. Wiesz stands 59 points ahead of Scott Russell of Placerville.

Grass Valley’s Pat Harvey Jr. finished 11th in the B feature race.

Pro Stocks

Nevada City’s Dan Brown Jr. made it 13 wins in 14 starts in Placerville’s Pro Stocks series, taking the checkered flag in the feature.

Brown Jr., who also won his heat race, holds a 92-point lead over Dennis Armstrong of El Dorado.

Ray Trimble of Colfax took second place, while Thomas Arbogast of Auburn was third. Armstrong finished seventh.

Marysville Raceway Park

360 Sprints

Grass Valley’s Jeremy Burt finished second in Saturday night’s 360 Sprints feature race in Marsyville, behind winner Korey Lovell of Yuba City.

Both Lovell and Burt are former season track champions at Marysville. Lovell stands second in this season’s points race, behind Brent Dothage of Lower Lake, while Burt holds fifth place on the season.

Wingless Sprints

Grass Valley driver Brett Youngman raced to fifth place in Saturday’s Wingless Sprints main event.. Jeremy Hawes of Marysville won the feature.

Silver Dollar Speedway

410 Sprints

Bear River High School graduate, and current USAC driver, Brad Sweet was back in Northern California last week and made a 10th place showing in the 410 Sprints at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico Friday.

Grass Valley’s Mark Hall drove to 19th place after winning his heat race, in which Sweet finished fourth.

Wingless Sprints

Browns Valley brothers Cody and Mason Myers brought home eighth and 13th places, respectively, in the main event of the Wingless Sprints division Friday.

Cody Myers cruised to third place in his heat race, while Mason finished seventh.

On the season, Mason Myers holds third place in the drivers standings, while Cody Myers is five points back in fourth place.
