Nevada Union nails down Metro title
Despite missing 19 serves Thursday, the Nevada Union girls volleyball team clinched the Metro Conference championship with a win in four games at Granite Bay, 25-20, 22-25, 25-17, 25-18.
Ali Daley racked up 32 kills to lead all players, while Stephanie Bayne, who had 14 digs defensively, had nine kills.
Alicia Landon had seven kills, and Whitney Nunnink had five.
The Miners (22-2) stay undefeated in league, and play again this weekend at the Union Mine Tournament.
Bear River 8, Mesa Verde 1
Bear River bounced back after a tough loss Tuesday to record an 8-1 win over Mesa Verde Thursday.
“Coming off a tough loss to West Campus, it’s just what the doctor ordered,” said Bruin head coach Dave Molina.
Kevin Gardner led the Bruins with a hat trick. Jacob Murnan added two goals, and Jarrett Russell, Anthony Logan, and Augie Smith each scored one.
The Bruins (5-3-2 Pioneer Valley League, 7-5-2 overall), delve into non-league action Tuesday when they host their rival from up the road, Forest Lake Christian, under the lights.
The Bear River JV team also won, beating Mesa Verde 7-0.
Steven Aguilar had two goals in the game, while Jared Dumont, Walker Davis, Bryant Chapman and Trevor Courtney each had one goal.
For Ryan Bock, who was in goal in the first half, he earned his seventh shutout of the season in the first half, while Justin Schuler shut out Mesa Verde in the second half.
Bear River moves to 10-0 in league, 14-1 overall.
Nevada Union 6, Grant 1
Wes Clay put in the first hat trick for any Nevada Union player this season Thursday at Grant in a 6-1 win over NU’s Metro Conference foe.
Matt Hillar, Connor Smith and David Weberg each scored one in the match, and Nate Rosenbloom had a pair of assists.
In goal, Robby Slaughter had a pair of saves and Jordan Stratigakes had three.
The Miners’ next game is scheduled for next Thursday at Johnson.
Following Thursday’s game, NU plays Friday in a makeup game under the lights at Nevada Union against North Tahoe. Junior varsity plays at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
The game against Yuba City, which postponed last Thursday, has been rescheduled for Monday, Nov. 1.
Frosh: NU 39, Yuba City 16
The Nevada Union frosh football team picked up its fifth win of the season Thursday at Yuba City.
Kelcey Wirick, Matt Schaake, Kamil Shehadeh, Brian Calbott and John Bettencourt each scored on rushes from inside the 20-yard line.
Tucker Colomb scored on a 40-yard draw, and Billy Leister took it in from 16 yards out on an option.
Defensively, Michael Saturnino led the Miners with seven tackles, while Cody Vallejo had six and Colomb had five.
Now 5-2 on the season, NU plays again next Thursday at home against El Camino.
