Nevada County Blazers capture tournament titles, league crown

The Nevada County Blazers, a year-round basketball team made up of primarily seventh graders from Nevada County, have dominated the middle school basketball scene in recent weeks winning two tournaments and the eighth grade competitive division of the Auburn Youth League.

To win the Auburn League title March 25th, the Blazers beat EV Cain in a 32-31 thriller.

One week later, the team won the division one 7th grade title in the Sac Area Sports’ “It’s Raining 3’s Tournament.”

The Blazers, coached by Jim Lee, beat the Lodi Wildcats 50-15, the Stockton Mavericks 37-28 and the Sacramento Swoosh 36-33 in the championship game.

Josh Ritchart, Colin Lee and Zach Welz led the way offensively with Ritchart hitting two key three-pointers late in the second half of the win against the Sacramento Swoosh. Johnny Jewett and Cameron Van Burkleo excelled on the defense end of the court, while Jordan Beskeen and Will Gray made their presence felt in the paint with strong rebounding.

The Blazers, playing in their four-year together, also won the Feb. 5-6th Attack the Rack division two tournament title.
