Nevada City Dirt Classic wraps 2014 series

Under a tall forest canopy on Saturday, and in and out of the upper Deer Creek drainage is where riders battled it out in race No. 3 of Nevada City Dirt Classic mountain bike cross country series.

Fifty racers from Santa Cruz to Washoe Valley, Nev., experienced mountain bike racing in Nevada County as race No. 3, the series’ final race, was a grueling loop of single track down to Deer Creek, up steep climbing switchbacks to connect to the Hallelejuh Trail, then looping around backside of Skillman Horse Camp and onto Pioneer Trail in a downhill direction in what’s called “the rock garden” by locals, and then more single track back to the start/finish.

And, after about 2 1/2 hours it was all over.

The almost six mile course with an elevation gain of 832 feet per lap was conquered by local Pro Jeremiah Newman who took first place with 28 minutes, 8 seconds on lap one, and a four-lap total time of 1:59:55.

Placing second was Chad Conzelmann, a pro racer from Davis.

Campbell Steers of Santa Cruz, was first on the podium in the women’s pro/expert race, and local Meredith Nunnick took second.

After the race a brand new mountain bike was raffled off, and 10-year old Caiden Peterson had the winning ticket. Caiden also raced in the 6-14 year old division, and took seventh at the race.
