Motor Sports Report: McClure races in Placerville

Michael McClure of Nevada City drove to victory in his heat race and then captured second-place in the Pure Stocks main event last Saturday night at Placerville Speedway.

McClure came out of the fourth row at the start of the 20-lap main event and trailed only Tom Tilford of Orangevale to the checker flag. Burney McClure, Michael’s father, finished sixth in the main event and was fifth in his heat race

Michael McClure still leads the Pure Stocks season points race by a 96-94 margin over Tilford.



In other racing at Placerville last Saturday, Nevada City’s Dan Brown Jr. sped to third-place in the Pro Stocks main event. Jon Tilford won the main, ahead of Jeffery Gavard and Brown in a race that saw no caution flags from start to finish.

Brown, who just turned 19 and a rookie in the Pro Stock division, also worked his way up from the 10th position in the field to finish fourth in his heat race.




And Grass Valley wingless sprint car driver Jay Youngman captured fourth-place in both of his heat and main event races. Youngman is currently tied for fourth-place in points running at Chico/Placerville combined.

Bob Newberry of Oakley won Saturday’s wingless sprint car main event, ahead of Steve Stein of Davis.

Racing at Placerville Speedway resumes tonight with 360 Sprints, Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks and Wingless Sprints on the program. Gates open at 5 p.m. and qualifying starts at 6:30, with racing to follow afterward.

• Last Saturday night at Twin Cities Speedway in Marysville, Charlie Correa won the Nor Cal Dwarf Car feature race was won by veteran after he overtook Pat Weger of Grass Valley midway through the race.

• More than 30,000 fans are expected to watch some of the American Motorcycle Association’s top motocross riders at the 38th annual Hangtown Motocross Classic today and Sunday at the Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area.

Racing starts at 12:15 p.m. today and 9 a.m. on Sunday. Today’s schedule includes special races and practice for the professionals and Sunday features riders competing in the opening round of the 125/250cc AMA Toyota Motocross Championships – including Ricky Carmichael, who has won the 250cc class each of the last four years and also won the 125cc class in 2000 and ’01.

• The Kawasaki AMA Superbike Showdown will be held today and Sunday at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. This is the fourth stop on the 19-race series for 2006. It will be a double header weekend, featuring 28-lap main events in the Superbike division both days. The weekend will also feature racing in Pro Honda Oils Supersport, Repsol Lubricants Superstock and Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme.
