Miners take down Bruins in four-game match

Nevada Union’s volleyball team overcame a slow start to defeat Bear River Thursday in preseason action, 10-15, 15-7, 15-8, 15-8.

The Bruins jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the first game, which forced NU to take a timeout.

“Bear River was a dominant team last year, but we thought this year, with three-game wins over Del Oro and Woodcreek, things would be different,” NU coach Bruce Grininger said. “After the timeout, we refocused and were in good control after that.”

NU (12-2 overall), which went with a lineup of seniors Thursday, was led by Tucker Thiesing, who had 10 blocks and 15 kills. Miles Holland added 15 kills and three blocks for the Miners. Mike Feagans, given the responsibility of the primary setter, had 65 assists.

“He’s played for us since he was a sophomore, and set for us last year,” Grininger said. “And he was ready tonight.”

NU scored 22 points on serves by Justin Jensen, who added three aces on the night. Russel Nuffer served up 13 points for the Miners, who now focus on next week’s Metro League showdown at home with Jesuit.

“I think the boys know they can play better,” Grininger said. “The next time we play Bear River, it will be a good match. Bear River was solid tonight.
