Miners sweep Golden Sierra volleyball

The Miners came out swinging in dominating fashion Tuesday, downing visiting Golden Sierra 25-10, 25-20, 25-12.

Leading the way were Taylor Japhet and Abbie Miraldi, who each totaled 12 kills in the victory. Ellie Selleck added seven more kills for the Miners, while Kendal Butterfield had 26 assists at setter.

Mallory Castles and Selleck each blocked two kills for points, while Butterfield and Miraldi each served up two aces on the night.

“Everybody contributed to this win,” said NU coach Chrys Dudek. “Aggressive serving was a key.”

Nevada Union (8-2) hosts Oak Ridge on Thursday.

JV: Nevada Union 2, Golden Sierra 0

Sierra Bell had five kills, while Jenna Britton and Miranda Castles each added four more, as NU’s junior varsity downed Golden Sierra 25-16, 27-25.

Marine McDowell served up four aces in the win, while Jennie Carroll had three aces and Castles served up two more.

NU improved to 2-0 with the victory.

Frosh: Nevada Union 2, Golden Sierra 0

NU’s frosh took care of business in two games, with Leila Whaley serving up 21 points for the Miners. Taylor Price had two kills and Teresa Anderson added two aces.


Jr. Miners earn Shrine Bowl selections

Five Jr. Miner football players and four Jr. Miner cheerleaders have all been selected to participate in the Sacramento (SYF) Youth Shrine Bowl, which benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children.
