Miners ski to third at Sugar Bowl

The Nevada Union alpine ski team took third overall in the slalom at Sugar Bowl Monday.

The girls, led by Jeannne Richert’s third-place finish in the individual overall (1 minute, 59.49 seconds), totaled 189 points to take third.

Davis won with a score of 201. Quincy took second with a score of 190.

NU’s Claire Miller posted a time of 2:07.84 to finish sixth overall. Teammate Sarah Callaham placed eighth with a time of 2:10.90.

The boys also took third.

The Miners totaled 174 points, nine behind second place Davis. Quincy, which won the overall event, took first among the boys with a score of 196.

NU was led by Bob Roberts’ ninth place finish (1:48.55). Nick Meyer took 12th with a time of 1:58.75. Matt Freitas was right behind in 14th with a 1:59.14.

Ryan Enright won the junior varsity boys race with a 2:08.12.

The Nevada Union freshman boys basketball team finished third in the Oakridge Tournament Jan.4.

The Miners, who were runners-up in the Woodcreek (Roseville) Tournament the weekend before, beat the hosts 74-57 in the first round, before falling 64-51 to Folsom.

Jared Vogel scored 11 points and Travis Edwards and James Brindley chippped in nine more in NU’s 58-43 win over Vacaville for third place.

Edwards was named to the all tournament team.
