Miners sending 10 wrestlers to subsections

Ten of Nevada Union’s 14 wrestlers advanced out of the league tournament to the subsection tournament, to be held Thursday and Friday at Natomas High School.

Robert McDaniel (112 pounds), Anthony Archuleta (125) and Chris Mosbacher (189) won their respective weight classes of the Capital Athletic League tournament.

NU finished second at the tournament, held at Del Campo High School. The performance moved them from third to second place overall in the CAL. Casa Roble won the overall team title.

“Robert faced a 119-pounder from Davis who dropped down for the tournament,” NU coach Steve Pilcher said. “The kid was beating Robert until Robert threw him to his back and won by injury default.”

Nolan Walters (fourth at 119), Drew Maraglia (third at 125), Jon Bird (second at 140), Melvin Bird (fourth at 152), Wade Sauer (second at 215) and Michael Bock (second at heavyweight) also advanced.

“It was a good showing by us, especially considering that three wrestlers moved up in weight,” Pilcher said.

Among other Miner wrestlers who placed at the CAL meet were Pat Cronan (sixth at 105), Michael Halby (fifth at 135) and Michael Flores (sixth at 160).
