Miners receive baseball honors

Nevada Union senior Russell Brackett was named to the first team Sierra Foothill League baseball team.

Brackett hit .325 this season for the 7-19 Miners. He was also named to the Optimist All-Star squad.

Brackett scored six times and batted in 10 with five doubles this year while swiping seven of eight bases. He committed just two errors all season, giving him a fielding percentage of .965.

Coach Ted White also said Brackett was chosen for the Coach’s Award at the Nevada Union’s recent banquet. White said the award is given to the player that “exemplifies Nevada Union baseball on and off the field.”

Junior Zander Zeisler meanwhile came away from the banquet with the most valuable pitcher award and earned honorable mention all-league honors.

Ziesler finished the year with a 2.03 ERA giving up just 14 earned runs in 48 1/3 innings. Ziesler struck out 37 on his way to a 3-3 record.

Junior Kelcey Wirick was also chosen as the best defensive player at the banquet. From his position at shortstop, he committed just nine errors for a fielding percentage of .911.
