Miners mop up foes in dual meet on mat

Nevada Union1s varsity wrestling team went 3-0 Saturday in NU1s four-team, round-robin dual tournament.

The Miners, who made quick work of both Laguna Creek (59-18) and Colfax (57-14), also were impressive in a 48-23 win over Golden Sierra.

Colfax finished second in the team competition.



Top individual performances for Nevada Union included eight wrestlers who went unbeaten on the day. Freshman 103-pounder Luke Manuel was 3-0, as was junior 112-pounder Robert McDaniel.

Nolan Walters (130), Drew Maraglia (135), Buddy Brady (145), Melvon Bird (152), Wade Sauer (215) and Mike Beck (275) also each went unbeaten. Sauer, who began the season wrestling as a heavyweight, had three wins at 215 pounds to improve to 14-0 on the year.




Nevada Union1s varsity is idle until the Jan. 4 Jim Briggs Invitational. NU1s junior varsity takes to the mats Dec. 28 in the Golden Sierra Tournament.

FLC falls short

After digging a hole by halftime of the annual Christmas Classic championship game Saturday, the Falcons of Forest Lake fought back into the contest but eventually fell to Jim Elliott Christian, 59-57.

3It was a thrilling game,² said FLC coach Steve Gonet. 3We were down by 10 at the half and fought back all the way through the second half. But we didn1t quite pull it out.

3They had an extremely tough defense and forced us into 23 turnovers. I thought that was the key to the game.²

Taylor Lawrence led the Falcons with 31 points, including 4-of-5 shooting from 3-pointland during the second-half run. He and teammate Mark Boatman (seven points, eight rebounds) were each named to the all-tourney team.

Chris Keller also added eight points for Forest Lake Christian, which remains idle until Dec. 30.

FLC1s junior varsity took first place in its version of the Christmas Classic, winning its pool play.

The Bear River girls basketball team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 54-46 loss to Colfax in the championship game of the Lady Eagles Invitational at Del Oro High School in Loomis Saturday.

Bear River (7-1overall) led by two points at the break, but were outscored 23-13 in the second half.

3Colfax really beat us up on the boards. They had lots of offensive rebounds for easy baskets,² Bear River head coach Duwaine Ganskie said.

Meghan Noud led the way for the Lady Bruins with 17 points.

Maya Bryant chipped in 15 points. Nicole Scott and Kayla Smith scored four points apeice in the loss.

Bear River will play at the Lake Oswego Tournament in Portland, Ore. Dec. 26-28.
