Miners make their mark at junior nationals meet

Three Nevada Union swimmers made their presence felt at the United States Swimming Junior Nationals Meet last week in Orlando, Fla., with two of them qualifying for the Senior Nationals this weekend in Seattle.

Seniors Drew Harris and Whitney Stephenson became the first members of the Penguin Swim Club to qualify for the Senior Nationals in six years, with Seth Derrick being the last swimmer to do so.

Harris qualified in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 40.84 seconds, while Stephenson made it in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 56.83. Both swimmers qualified for the finals in three events.

Freshman Hayley Porter’s time in the 50 freestyle looked to be a finals-range time, but a controversial call disqualified her for an illegal start.

More than 100 swimmers, sometimes as many as 160, competed in each event – all under 18 years old.
