Miners land seven on all-conference team

Seven members of the Nevada Union football team have been selected as All-Delta Valley Conference first team members by the league’s coaches.

Franklin senior running back Edward Russell was named the DVC’s Most Valuable Player. Russell rushed for 1,355 yards and 18 touchdowns and caught 27 passes for 519 yards and three TDs.

Franklin senior quarterback Oscar Loza was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Elk Grove outside linebacker Justin Meehan was named Defensive Player of the Year.

NU senior quarterback Chad Mason, who completed 69 of 123 passes for 1,004 yards and eight touchdowns against two interceptions, leads the Miners’ offensive representatives on the first team.

Senior running backs Jesse Ettlin and Dave Zealear join Mason on the first team. Zealear leads the Miners with 925 rushing yards with nine touchdowns on 143 carries, while Ettlin has rushed for 897 yards and 11 touchdowns on 129 carries.

Senior offensive linement Taylor Dever and Steve Flores, also earned first team honors after helping to lead an NU offense that amassed 3,707 yards and averaged 32.3 points per game.

On defense, NU was represented by seniors Zach Masch and Brian Milhous. Masch, a defensive lineman, has 46 tackles (21 solo) with three sacks. Milhous, a senior free safety, has 80 tackles (39 solo) on the season with two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Earning second-team All-DVC honors from Nevada Union were junior wide receiver Colin Casey, senior wide receiver Doug Dolan, senior linemen Jason Niederberger and Eric Tilly, along with senior tight end Wes Plummer

NU senior running back Andrew Metroka earned honorable mention All-DVC.

Dever highly sought

Nevada Union senior Taylor Dever continues to be highly recruited by Division I football programs across the nation.

Dever, a 6-foot, 6-inch, 300-pound offensive tackle, just returned from an official visit to the University of Washington this past weekend, according to his father, Tom Dever.

Along with ongoing communication with many coaches throughout the NCAA, Dever has been offered full scholarships by 13 programs – Arizona State, Boise State, Fresno State, Miami, Nebraska, Oregon, Oregon State, Sacramento State, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah State, Washington and Washington State.

Bruins kick off early

Bear River’s first round playoff game against Foothill will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday.

Originally scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., the game was moved up at the request of Foothill High School officials, according to Bear River officials.

Miners named All-SFL

A trio of Nevada Union soccer players earned All-Sierra Foothill League honors.

Senior midfielders Jeremy Adams and Blue Smith were joined by senior goalkeeper Robby Slaughter on the All-SFL squad.

NU senior forward Jose Calderon earned honorable mention from SFL coaches.
