Miners, Cougars to meet in key Metro matchup

Among the second week of league action matchups, there’s perhaps no basketball game that looms larger this week for western Nevada County clubs than the Metro Conference girls showdown between Nevada Union and Kennedy.

NU (11-3 overall, 1-0 Metro) will travel to Sacramento Thursday in an effort to take sole possession of first place in league standings.

The host Cougars (14-3, 2-0), who won back-to-back Division I section championships in 2001-02 before falling to champ Laguna Creek last year, and the Miners are the only Metro teams to survive Week 1 without a loss.

Kennedy defeated Woodland 72-44 and Yuba City 41-35 to stand atop the Metro heap with a 2-0 mark. NU, which had an opening night bye, opened with a 56-43 home win over Johnson Thursday.

But before the Miners can look ahead to Thursday’s matchup, NU must first take care of business today at home against McClatchy (12-3, 1-1), which lost 46-44 to Yuba City and beat Grant 59-36 in the opening week.
