Miners continue to roll in Legion play

The Grass Valley Miners continued their impressive start to the American Legion summer season Wednesday, topping the Bear River squad 10-0 in five innings.

The win is the Miners’ fifth of the season and second straight mercy-rule victory over the Bruins in as many days. The Miners are 5-0 this season with wins over Del Oro and Bear River.

In Wednesday’s contest, the Miners got an impressive start on the mound from Christian Straub. The talented hurler went the first four innings without allowing a hit or run and struck out six.

Straub was relieved in the fifth by Chris Sardo, who cut through the Bruin lineup with three straight strikeouts to end the game.

From the plate, Jakob Freele, Grass Valley’s leadoff hitter and a speedy outfielder, tallied two hits, Dalton Maxwell added a double and an RBI, catcher Dylan Conger tallied a pair of hits and an RBI, Brady Porter chipped in a base knock, and Conner Upton ripped a single and notched an RBI in the win.

The Miners have proven themselves to be the top American Legion team out of Nevada County over the last two days by outscoring Bear River 23-1 while allowing the Bruins just two hits and one run in two games.

The Miners and the Bruins conclude their three-game series today at 5:30 p.m. at the Bear River baseball field.
