Miners, Bruins vie for state berths

Three western Nevada County athletes will open competition today in the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Track & Field Meet at Sacramento City College’s Hughes Stadium.

Action is slated to start with field events at 3 p.m. Bear River senior Rachel Welz will contend in both the high jump and long jump, before joining Bruin classmate Nicole Jackson in the preliminary round of the 100 and 300 hurdles.

Welz’s performance in the field events today will determine whether she earns a berth into the California state championships, while the finals for running events will be held Friday.

Also competing today will be Nevada Union’s Chase Dixon, who qualified for the meet in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Like Jackson and Welz, Dixon will also be attempting to qualify for Friday’s finals.

On Friday, two more western Nevada County athletes will join the fray. NU’s Dominic Ruggiero and Cole Stanford will compete in the triple jump when field event action opens at 3 pm. Friday.

Admission for the Masters Meet is $8 for adults and $5 for students with an ID.

To get to Sac City College’s Hughes Stadium, take Business 80 to Highway 99 south. Take the 12th Avenue/Sutterville exit. At the top of the ramp, turn right and go west one mile over the railroad overpass. At the end of Sutterville Road, turn right on Freeport. Sacramento City College will be on the right-hand side.
