Miners, Bruins compete at Stanford Invite

Local track and field athletes from Nevada Joint Union High School District qualified to compete at the Stanford Invitational meet last Friday and Saturday.

Qualifying in the 3000-meter race was Nevada Union’s Nora Pizzella, who finished 14th with a time of 10-minutes, 29-seconds, which is a personal record in the event. Riley Bowen, a standout freshman from Sonoma Academy won in 9:49.

Also competing for NU was Delaney Smith, who tied for sixth in the high jump, with a jump of 5-feet, 0.25-inches. Erica Higley of Bear River tied for fourth, with a jump of 5-02. Lillianna Hebert of California High School won the girls high jump, with a height of 5-06.

Jason McShane from Bear River competed in the pole vault, finishing seventh with a vault of 13-11.25. Austin Laut of Oak Ridge was first with a vault of 15-.05.

Higley and McShane head to southern California next weekend for the prestigious Arcadia Invitational. NU’s varsity squad heads to the Thunder Invitational in Rocklin on Saturday.
