The Nevada Union football team handed out its second beating in as many weeks with its 71-0 homecoming win over C.K. McClatchy of Sacramento Friday.

The Miners (6-0 overall, 2-0 Metro Conference), who dismantled Hiram Johnson of Sacramento, 52-14 eight nights ago, scored touchdowns on 10 of its 12 possessions in the lopsided win.

McClatchy, 62-0 losers to Grant of Sacramento Oct. 11, dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

“We challenged the kids in practice this week to come out and play as hard as they could tonight no matter who we were playing. I thought we sputtered out of the gate last week, but they came out (and played tough right from the start),” NU head coach Dave Humphers said.

The Miner offense didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard.

The hosts set up on their own 39-yard line after a 29-yard Chris Thibodeau kickoff return.

Miner quarterback Jon Sheets, who entered the game atop the conference’s passers with 811 yards, hit Joey Bratton in the right flat with a routine swing pass.

Bratton, turned upfield, then juked the only defender not fooled by Humpher’s play call, and raced untouched up the right sideline for the eventual game winner.

Kyle McTighe nailed a 37-yard field goal on NU’s next possession to put the hosts up 10-0.

“I thought everybody really played together tonight. The offense was talking to each other and the defense (played their hearts out), McTighe, whose 55-yard first quarter field goal attempt hit the cross bar, said.

Bratton, Thibodeau, Sheets and Vu Pham finished with a pair of touchdowns each.

Joe Dolan, Dan Smith and Chad Bomar also scored in the win.

The defense, which gave up one first down in the first half, notched its first shutout of the year.

Kris Sulonen, Eric Harvey and Christian Carlson had a sack each. Noah Bailey had an interception.

NU will play at Kennedy of Sacramento 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
