Miner wrestlers do well

Nevada Union heavyweight wrestler Wade Sauer is on his way back to the state tournament.

After finishing third there last year, Sauer has a shot to place even higher. After Friday night’s action at the Sac-Joaquin Section Tournament at Folsom High School, Sauer had pinned both his opponents, including Bear River’s Sean Belnap, and earned a spot in today’s semifinals. That gives him an automatic berth in the state tournament no matter how he does today.

That’s not to say he won’t be motivated to defend his section championship from last season.

Joining at state will be 121-pounder Luke Manuel, who defeated his two opponents Friday and will face No. 1 seed Mica Furgeson from Del Oro in todays semis.

But the Miners weren’t done there. 137-pound wrestler Drew Maraglia lost in Friday night’s quarterfinals to Woodcreek’s No. 2 seeded wrestler, 8-6, but still has a shot at the state tournament coming up through today’s consolation rounds.

In the same boat are sophomore Andrew Jackson (217), who lost in the quarterfinals to the subsection champion, and Melvin Bird (154), who also lost in the quarters. Both are still shooting for shots at the state tournament.

Melvin’s brother Jon Bird went 1-2 on Friday and is out of the tournament, as are Andrew Owen (127), Nolan Walters (142), who went 0-2 on Friday.

The Miners sit in fourth place as a team heading into today’s action.
