Medals abound for trio

A trio of local mountain bikers took to the hills in the Howell Mountain Mountain Bike Race in Angwin, California on Aug. 15.

All three – including Nevada City’s Rick Kalb, Grass Valley’s Paul Falvey, and Penn Valley’s Eddy Cruz – represented the county well as they each earned spots on the podium in their respective classes.

The event itself was comprised of four different races based on skill level, which were separated into age groups.

Cruz took first place in his 45+ age group in the beginner class, which is one lap around the course that travels 10 miles and climbs 1,000 feet.

In the 45-49 age group in the sport class, which races two laps, Falvey took third place.

The most advanced rider of the trio, 44-year-old Rick Kalb, took third in the expert class, which includes three laps and a total of 30 miles and 3,000 feet of climbing.

“It was really grueling,” said Kalb, who finished in the top 10 last year in the sport class.

“I was like, ‘What was I thinking when I moved up?’,” he said. “But I finished pretty strong.”

It has only been three years since Kalb started riding competitively, and only three months since he joined the likes of Cruz and Falvey.

Although they have been living in the same county for years, it took them until late spring to unite, when they met at a race at Northstar Resort in Lake Tahoe.

They will again be riding Northstar in September when the California State Point Series comes to Northern California.
