The Grass Valley Council of the Knights of Columbus is pleased to sponsor the Father Phelan 15th annual Golf Tournament Aug. 25 at the Lake Wildwood Golf Course.

The format will be an age-adjusted scramble with a 1 p.m. shotgun start and dinner to follow.

For the past 14 yearsm the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic men’s fraternal service organization, has hosted a golf tournament to benefit two local charities. In the past, beneficiaries included Habitat for Humanity, Sierra Adoption Services, Living-Well Medical Clinic, California Special Olympics, Camp Recreation, The Friendship Club, the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition and Interfaith Food Ministry. All proceeds have been equally divided between the two selected deserving organizations.

This year, Hospitality House and Mt. St. Mary’s Academy have been selected.

The golf tournament is named after Father Nicholas Phelan (1926 – 2011), a past stalwart of the Grass Valley community. He served as pastor of St. Patrick’s Church from 1979 until his retirement in 1999. He continued to serve as our Chaplain for the members of the Grass Valley Council of the Knights of Columbus for many years thereafter. Like many Irish priests, his passion was golf.

The two basic principles of this tournament are to have fun and raise money for worthwhile nonprofit organizations. Golfers are welcome regardless of skill level. Singles or pairs will be grouped in foursomes to the best of our ability. Women golfers are encouraged to participate, and special skill prizes will be available.

The entry fee is $125 per golfer; however, dinner guests are welcome for a $30 donation. You may reserve a space by calling Chito Gonzaga, the registration chairman, at 530-432-0331.

During the dinner, there will be a silent auction and raffle. If you are able to donate a prize for the auction or raffle, please contact Ed Wydra at 530-432-2591. The tourney also accepts sponsorships at the gold ($500), silver ($250) and family ($100) levels if one is so inclined to make a donation from the heart.
