Kellyn Loehr’s bid to become the first Nevada County swimmer to defend a Sac-Joaquin Section individual title came up just short at Tokay High School in Lodi Saturday.

The Bear River senior – who had come down with whooping cough in the days before the section’s trials – won last year’s section 100-meter breaststroke crown with a personal-best time of one minute, 4.93 seconds, but fell to fourth this year at 1:07.44.

None of Bear River’s three relay teams which had made the cut for trials advanced to the finals, but Bruin head coach Taryn Loehr stayed up-beat.

“I was happy for all of the girls to make it this far. I’m very proud of them.

Bear River’s 200 freestyle relay team of Loehr, Anne Heggli, Kayla Harrington and Allison Hrutky posted a time of 1:48.14 to take sixth in the consolation finals
