Lockhart playing tonight

Senior Jessica Lockhart’s selection to the 2006 Optimist All-Star softball game has secured her a place in school history. Lockhart is the first player from Forest Lake Christian to be selected to play in the game.

She will join 19 other players from the Sacramento area to make up the North team coached by Linda Merrida from Pioneer High School. The North squad will take on the South team at 7 p.m. tonight in a nine-inning game at Capital Christian High School in Sacramento.

The North team consists of players from Casa Roble, Pioneer, Rocklin, Bella Vista, Mesa Verde, Mira Loma, Woodland, Foothill, Woodcreek, Roseville and Colfax.

Lockhart was a four-year starter for the Falcons, being named captain three of those years. After a standout senior season, she was unanimously named the Central Valley Christian League’s MVP.

In 10 games this season she hit .645 with 18 RBIs, 15 walks, eight stolen bases and two home runs.

After playing catcher her first three years of high school, she played shortstop this year.

“It’s definitely exciting,” Lockhart said of her MVP honor. “It was something I wasn’t expecting, but it was definitely a goal. I feel like I have slumped at times during high school softball because it wasn’t the level I was used to playing during the summer. But this year I wanted to have a strong year and follow in my brother’s footsteps.”

Lockhart’s brother, Matt, was named league MVP his senior baseball season in 2003. She is still deciding if she will play college softball next year.
