Chris McGovern has spent much of his life in the world of cycling and his clients are reaping the benefits.

McGovern is the owner of Real Wheels Bicycle Studio in Nevada City and has more than 25 years of racing experience. He passes his wealth of knowledge to young and upcoming racers as well as pros through his coaching company Cycleution.

McGovern’s coaching prowess was recently on display as a pair of riders who enlisted him as their coach have become national champions.

Tobin Ortenblad, who McGovern has coached for more than four years, won the 2016 US Cyclo-Cross U23 National Championship Jan. 10 in Asheville, North Carolina.

“It’s unreal. It’s literally a dream come true for sure,” Ortenblad told cyclingnews.com after his victory.

Ben Gomez Villafane, who McGovern has coached for a little more than a year, earned the Junior Men’s 15/16 National Championship, Jan. 9 in Asheville, North Carolina.

McGovern said the key to his coaching success is pulling from his vast experience as an amateur and professional cyclist.

“In cycling you can go online and search for a coach and find 100s of them,” McGovern said. “I’ve actually ridden for a lifetime. I’ve been there and done that. I’ve really found my stride in coaching with my experience and ability to relate to the athlete.”
