Little League: GV Giants hold off PV Giants in thriller

In a Little League Junior Division thriller, the Grass Valley Giants edged the Penn Valley Giants, 10-9.

The game was decided by a terrific catch in left field by Donald Cameron, with the tying and winning runs about to score.

The victory by Grass Valley sets up a Saturday showdown with the Grass Valley Yankees for the championship at 10 a.m. at Condon Park.

Against Penn Valley, Grass Valley started fast, scoring three runs in the first inning with catcher Luke Cornish knocking in two with a single.

Penn Valley struck right back with four in the first on consecutive hits by Owen Day, Westin Gaddis and Ben Gemetti.

Tim O’Sullivan scored in front of them after getting on due to an error.

Day’s home run in the second made it 5-3 for Penn Valley, but Grass Valley answered back by scoring one in the third when Ryan Elkins walked and Andrew Link doubled him home.

Grass Valley moved ahead to stay in the fourth by scoring two on a walk to Kevin Uchida, a single by starting pitcher Ben Powell— who threw six awesome innings — a walk to Elkins and a two-run single by Link.

Three more runs in the sixth were highlighted by Cameron’s second of three hits of the evening.

The 10th run was scored by Link, coming on Cameron’s third hit.

In the bottom of the seventh, and trailing 10-5, Penn Valley rallied with four runs before Cameron’s game-saving catch. Big hits were two, two-run singles by Tyler Villnow and Justis Arnberg.
