Junior High hoops tourney on tap

Today marks the beginning of the annual Nevada County Junior High Boys Basketball Tournament, which has been held in various formats since the late 1960s. Eighteen teams will vie for four separate tournament championships.

Teams will compete in either the seven-team large school tournament or a four-team small school tournament, at either the seventh or eighth grade level. Today’s first-round games will be played at Seven Hills, Union Hill, Weimar Hills and Sierra Foothill High School.

Friday’s games will be held at either Magnolia Junior High School or Bear River High School, while Saturday’s championship, third-place and consolation games will be played at Bear River High School. Games begin Saturday at 10 a.m.

Both Magnolia teams have first-round byes after the seventh grade team won the regular season championship and the eighth grade team shared the regular season championship with Union Hill.

Schools participating in the tournament include: Chicago Park, Grass Valley Charter, Mount Saint Mary’s, Ready Springs, Magnolia, Seven Hills, Union Hill, Gilmore, Forest Lake Christian, Weimar and Pleasant Valley.

Last year’s tournament was held at Nevada Union.
