Next week’s Western Zone Swimming Championships in Redding will have a decidedly Grass Valley flavor to it.

The four members of the Grass Valley-based Penguins swim team who qualified for the all-star event will see to that.

Drew Harris, who took third in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 500 freestyle at the Sac-Joaquin Section varsity championships for Nevada Union as a sophomore last May, will be joined by fellow Miners Jon Huffman-Eddy and Ryan Stefani in the 15-16 age group.

NU sophomore Katelyn Lee also made the cut.

She’ll compete in the 13-14 age group.

“I’ve been preparing myself mentally,” Harris said. “I can get really worked up before a meet, so I’ve been working on staying positive (and focused).”

To qualify for the event, competitors must have hit certain qualifying times at sanctioned meets in the year prior to the meet.

Harris, 16, has met the times in the 50, 100, 200 and freestyle events as well as the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

Huffman-Eddy, also 16, has qualifying times in the 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyle.

“I’m excited. Not at all nervous,” he said. “I don’t know if I can call it overconfidence, but I’m definitely expecting to (swim fast).”

We’ve got a good team going up. I expect some fast times,” he added.

Stefani, 16, has the times for both the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Lee enters the week-long event with the qualifying times for the 200 and 400 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.
