Hot Shots: Zachary Welz

Grass Valley’s Zachary Welz made a big splash at the U.S.A. Track and Field Junior Olympics national championships in Omaha Thursday.

Welz, 10, tied for ninth in the boys bantam division (9-10) long jump with a distance of 13 feet, 10 1/4 inches.

DeSaan Hardwick of San Diego won the event with a distance of 15-7.

Welz earned a ticket to Nebraska thanks to a prime time performance at the USATF Pacific Association championships earlier this month.

That’s where the Pleasant Ridge Elementary School fifth grader won the long jump (14-8), took fifth in the 100 meter dash (13.95) and sixth in the 200.
