Hot Shots – GABRIEL INGERSOLL

GABRIEL INGERSOLL had never been in a competitive butterfly event before last weekend’s Penguin Plunge, held at Nevada Union High School Friday through Sunday.

But that hardly means the 10-year-old Nevada City resident can’t get the job done.

Ingersoll took first place in the 9-and-10 age group 100 butterfly Saturday, and took second in the 50 butterfly as part of an overall impressive showing at the Penguins’ season ending swim meet.

Ingersoll, who moved back to the area with his family from Spokane, Wash., two years ago, took first in his age group in the 200 Intermediate medley on Friday, added a second place finish in the 100 IM Saturday, as well as second-place finishes in 50 breastroke and 50 freestyle. He took third in the 50 breastroke.

The three-day meet featured 15 club teams from various parts of Northern California, including Bay Area teams and a club team from Stockton.

“I’m pleased with what I have done here,” Ingersoll said. “I was most pleased with the 100 butterfly, because I had never done it before and it is a very hard stroke.”

Ingersoll not only loves to swim, but also has a keen interest in music. Ingersoll plays the Scottish snare drum, and practices the drum with the City of Sacramento Pipe Band.

“For my drumming, my goal is to be a Grade 1 level drummer,” Ingersoll said. “And for swimming, the goal is to be the best I can.”
