Allyson Harvie will have little time to catch her breath before testing her golfing skills at the collegiate level.

Harvie, who placed third in the state as a Bear River senior last spring, will have an opportunity to make her presence felt at Ohio State in less than two weeks, when she starts practicing to qualify for the mid-September NCAA Preview tournament, featuring the top 25 collegiate programs in the country.

“The top player on the team just quit, and that opens the doors for me,” said Harvie, one of two freshman women given scholarships at Ohio State for the upcoming season. “I’ve been working hard, and my coach just gave me a motivational speech; and that is something I like.”

Harvie will play in one more local tournament before leaving for Ohio State next week. She will participate in the 2002 California Women’s State Fair Championship, a statewide amateur tournament held Saturday and Sunday at Bartley Cavanaugh golf course in Sacramento. Harvie placed second in the championship flight of the tournament in 2000 and again in 2001.

A strong showing this weekend would provide Harvie with some confidence before she heads to Columbus. Harvie, who sets her goals high, was disappointed to miss qualifying for the 2002 United States Open, missing the qualifying cut by two strokes.

“I hope by the end of this year, I am one of the freshman golfers people are talking about,” she said.
