For Acorns manager Jimmy Stewart of Lake of the Pines, senior softball is hardly a casual affair.

The Acorns play 175-200 games a year. Later this summer, the Acorns will travel to Salem, Ore., to play in the AA-World Series national tournament, featuring more than 65 teams. They also will go to the World Games in St. George, Utah, Oct. 6-11, where 37 countries will be represented.

“We go up there planning to win the World Series,” Stewart said. “If we can’t win it, we are not going.”

The Acorns qualified for the World Series tournament in Reno last month, playing AAA-level and super-majors team.

“To be out here on our age, and that there is a major tournament here is great,” said Stewart, who also sponsors and pitches for the Acorns. “At 60-plus, you can still play a game you loved as a little guy.”

The Acorns have a roster of 14-15 players. The Acorns were formed last year by Stewart, who has played senior softball for 13 years.

“I wanted to go back and have my own team,” Stewart said. “It is a new venture, as far as the team name, but I’ve played senior softball with a lot of these guys for years.”

The Acorns defeated eventual champ Fairway Ford Saturday 15-14. Ford has won national championships at both the 60-over division and the 65-over division.

“It was probably the biggest game we’ve won this year,” Stewart said. “They are fabulous. I think we surprised them because they’ve never played us.”
