Hiiker of Himalayas set to speak to skiers

Nordic Skiers of Nevada County have announced Phil Des Jardins will be the guest speaker at Thursday’s first meeting of the season.

He will present a slideshow of his successful climb of Cho Oyo a 26,906-foot peak in the Himalayas. To get to base camp for this mountain Des Jardins traveled by way of Beijing, China and Lhosa, Tibet before going overland to the border of Tibet and Nepal.

Beyond the climbing adventure, those attending will get a chance to see pictures of Tibet an area few American travelers ever get to see.

According to club Vice President Phil Horning, members of the general public are welcome.

The club gathers at 6 p.m. at Seaman’s Lodge in Nevada City and starts with a Pot Luck at 6:30 p.m. People attending should bring their own plate, utensils, and a dish to share. New members are always welcome.

Snowshoe enthusiasts are invited to join the Nordic Skiers of Nevada County.

Last year, the club voted to include snowshoeing as a club activity and to actively encourage snowshoers to join the club.

“Skiers and snowshoers have a common interest in enjoying the backcountry in winter through non-motorized transportation” Horning said. “It just makes sense to include snowshoers and help them organize trips that provide great social opportunities with safety as an additional benefit.”

For more information, contact Horning at 265-8492 in the evenings and 478-6210 during the day.
