Gymnastics: Wagnecht wins state championship

The Gold Country boys gymnastics team is sending a pair of gymnasts on to the Regional competition in Ontario after stellar efforts at the State meet last weekend.

In Level 5, Jeffrey Wagnecht, 10, dominated on his way to becoming a state champ, taking first place in three individual events and finishing first all-around with a score of 66.3. Wagnecht took the top spot in the floor exercise (11.5), the pommel horse (10.75) and the parallel bars (11.35). He placed third on the vault (10.3) and took third on the high bar (11.1) as well.

Wagnecht’s effort landed him on the All- Star team, which means he will represent Northern California against the other areas in the region (Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii and Southern California) at the regional competition.

Also making regionals in Level 5 from Gold Country is Chance Bacon, 10, who finished in fifth place all-around with a score of 61.4. Bacon was third on the parallel bars (10.55), fifth on the pommel horse (10.4), sixth on the rings (10.25), sixth on the high bar (10.9) and seventh on the floor exercise (9.9).

The Regional competition is set for April 9-12 in Ontario.
