GV Magic take 3rd at Novato Classic

Despite playing shorthanded and against top talent, the Grass Valley Magic AAU girls basketball team came away from the Novato Classic last weekend with a 5-1 record and a third-place finish.

Playing with a team of six throughout the tourney, the Magic fell to Cardinal Newman in the semifinal round, then went on to beat Menlo by 26 points in the third-place game.

Sammy DeHart and Sydney Porter were both named to the All-Tourney team, and fellow Nevada Union varsity players from last season Erin Selleck and Melanie O’Brien provided quality play while taking on a large number of minutes, head coach Rich Simpton said.

Jen Becker and Callie Kraus, also brought good energy and strong play for the Magic throughout the tourney. Kraus even got to play the hero at one point, hitting the game-winning shot for the Magic, said Simpton.

“Jen and Callie both got nice minutes,” Simpton said. “It was good for them to build trust with the varsity players.”

With varsity players Emma Peterson and Katie Johnson taking time off this summer, the Magic have had the opportunity to invite younger players to join the team and play with them as they travel up and down the West Coast competing in tournaments.

The Magic have one more tournament left this summer, which gets started this weekend in San Diego.
