GV Legion takes third

Grass Valley Post 130’s American Legion senior baseball team finished its season with a third place finish in the District 11 tournament at El Dorado High School during the weekend.

Grass Valley lost to Roseville 7-5 in the winner’s draw Saturday, then lost to host El Dorado 8-4 to be eliminated.

“I thought we played real well,” Grass Valley head coach Ted White said. “The last game was the sixth of the week for us, but we were in both games until late.”

Grass Valley’s Cody Godfrey struck out nine batters and gave up only two earned runs in the game with Roseville. Chris Brown went 2-for-4 in the contest, including a home run.

Jason Snavely went 2-for-4 in the game versus Roseville.

Brown had a bases-clearing double for 3 RBIs in the loss to El Dorado. Jason Van Matre struck out six batters for Grass Valley in that game.

Grass Valley concludes its summer campaign at 15-15-2 overall.

“We got everything we wanted out of the season, including some pleasant surprises like the play of Jonathan Iris-Wilbanks or the pitching of Justin Deme,” White Said.

White said that perhaps Friday’s victory over Auburn in the pigtail round of the playoffs was the highlight of the season for the team. The win against Auburn sent Grass Valley to El Dorado.

“It was about the best we’ve played this year,” White said. “We were hitting on all cylinders.”
