The Grass Valley Elks Lodge held its annual Hoop Shoot contest Saturday at Lyman Gilmore gymnasium with 38 boys and 17 girls participating.

The two divisions, boys and girls, and three age brackets – 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 – produced six first-place winners who will advance to district level in Portola, Calif., on Jan 18.

The winners in Portola will be eligible to participate at the state level in Carmichael, followed by a region competition in Fresno. Region winners advance to nationals in Springfield, Mass., in April.

Saturday’s first-place winners include:


9 & under Cameron Cantway 21 baskets

10-11 Shane Phillips 18 baskets

12-13 John Wivholm 15 baskets


9 & under Laura Daniels 15 baskets

10-11 Ana Rubio 7 baskets

12-13 Kellie Kastanes 11 baskets
