Goldmine grapplers place at state meet

The Goldmine Wrestling Club took eight wrestlers to the California Freestyle State Championships last weekend at the San Jose convention center and came back with three state medalists.

The two day tournament held on June 8-9 featured the best grapplers in the state. Jake Purdy placed third with six wins and one loss in the 15-16 year old division. Will Sumner placed fourth with six wins and two losses in the 11-12 year old division. And Trevor Painter placed eighth with four wins and two losses in the 15 -16 year old division.

Julian Purdy also had an outstanding tournament with four wins and two losses while first year wrestler Jason Murray posted a two-win, two-loss record. Other wrestlers with strong efforts were Kyle Newman, Chase Federmeyer and Michael Tipton.

While Jake Purdy qualified for the nationals by placing in the top three at state, Julian Purdy and Will Sumner qualified for the regional championships, held next week at Idaho State University in Pocatello, ID.

With good performances at the regional tournament, Purdy and Sumner may compete at the National Championships held in Orem, Utah on July 2-5.
