Girl deserves credit

I ran the 10K in the Daffodil Run on Sunday, and I just now read the article by Steve Bond on The Union Web site.

I must correct him.

Shortly after passing the 5K turnaround point, a very small set of footsteps came up behind me. I looked over, and there was a girl with pigtails, maybe 9 or 10 years old. I congratulated her on her performance, but she just asked me (very casually, as if she didn’t even notice that she was doing a good 7.5-minute mile) how far along we were. I answered that, well, we just passed the 1.5-mile mark, so that meant that we were one quarter of the way through the race. “Oh, OK.”

And she trotted off ahead of me, pigtails bouncing. Needless to say I was very impressed, and so kept my eye on her to see if she would keep up that pace.

When the 10K turnaround (finally) came into view, I could just spot my little friend making her way around the congregation of water-people.

Alexa Lua definitely did complete the entire 10K course.

Give her the hard-won credit that she deserves, and tell her to keep up the good work.
