Four Miners earn first-round byes in Division II
Last week’s league meets were essentially an all-comers round, the first shot in California high school wrestling’s postseason state tournament.
Each varsity wrestler in each weight bracket from each high school lineup had the chance to step onto the mat and state his or her case as a contender.
This week, those spots in the bracket were earned.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class from league tournaments throughout the Sac-Joaquin Section advanced to the divisional round, which opens today. This week, they’ll shoot for a spot at the Masters, where they’ll be one of the section’s final 32 in their class, regardless of division.
Both Bear River and Nevada Union high schools carried a large contingent from the league tournaments to the divisionals.
Nine Bruins will weigh in this morning at East Union High in Manteca for the Division IV section championships, where they’ll face the best from the Capital Valley Conference, the Valley Oak League and their own Pioneer Valley League. That means the likes of annual front-runners Foothill, Placer and Oakdale.
Twelve members of the Miners’ 13-man lineup are still alive and looking for more today at Oak Ridge in El Dorado Hills against the cream of the crop from the Metro Conference, the Sierra Valley Conference and, of course, the Sierra Foothill League. For the Miners, that means Burbank, Del Oro and Ponderosa.
The top five in each weight class will move on to Masters.
Hoping to own a spot in that bracket after the two-day divisional round will be:
