Flores second in S. Carolina

Nevada Union High School senior Erik Flores finished second in the Azalea Invitational Golf Tournament in Charleston, South Carolina over the weekend.

Flores finished strong with five straight birdies on the back nine, allowing him to card a 3-under-par 68 in the second round of play of the tournament, which turned out to be the final round as the invite was shortened due to rain.

Duke University junior Nathan Smith, from Soguel, took first place with a three-round score of 12-under-par 201 at the Country Club of Charleston.

Flores, who has accepted a scholarship to play golf next fall for the UCLA Bruins, finished with a 203.

Strong performances on the national level are nothing new to Flores. He is a three-time American Junior Golf Association All-American and placed among the top 16 finalists at the United States Junior Amateur Tournament last July.

He also participated in the 15th annual Canon Cup late last summer, competing alongside some of the nation’s top juniors in the two-team competition, similar to the Ryder Cup.

Flores and his Nevada Union teammates will be back in action much closer to home Monday, as the Miners compete in the Rocklin Tournament at Sunset Whitney Country Club.
