Fast start for Bruin volleyball

Monday’s three-game sweep of Rio Linda in the Sac-Joaquin Section Foundation Game apparently served the Bear River Bruin volleyball team well as a dress rehearsal of sorts.

Wednesday night’s actual opening act at McCrory Gymnasium – this one counting in the win-loss columns – was nearly as impressive.

The Bruins beat visiting Folsom in four games by a 25-13, 25-27, 27-25 and 25-18 count.

“One of the things we’ve been talking about is that we’ve got to start strong, especially at home,” said Bear River coach Matt MacDonald. “And we came out fast.”

“Even in the second game we had a large lead, but Folsom chipped away at it and it was pretty close all the way through the third game. Then, the last game, obviously, went a little better for us.”

As was the case in Monday’s scrimmage against the Knights, Bear River got strong games up front from Christie Nat, Katie Tomkiewicz and Sara Schell.

Nat had four kills and five blocks, while Tomkiewicz totaled 13 kills and Schell led the way in the hitting attack with 17 kills. Schell also racked up four aces from behind the service line.

MacDonald said Hannah Mosman played a strong game at libero for the Bruins.

Bear River (1-0) hits the road today, traveling to Roseville for a 6 p.m. varsity match.
