Falcons soccer edge out Sacramento Waldorf

Forest Lake Christian’s boys soccer team opened the Central Valley Christian League season with a 2-1 win over Sacramento Waldorf.

Within the first 15 minutes, the Falcons scored on an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Randy Van Winkle, whose goal was practically uncontested, FLC coach Thad Kopec said.

“It was a pretty good shot, but it didn’t seem like it had enough power,” Kopec said “The goalie didn’t go after it.”

Sacramento Waldorf followed with a goal five minutes later, as the two teams went into the half 1-1.

Jesse Allred scored the final goal for the Falcons, a 30-yard, left-footed strike in the upper right hand corner of the goal.

FLC was helped by its strong defense against a team that had won against Bear River and Capital Christian.

“Our defense was awesome,” Kopec said. “Garrett Koch, Jeff Paulsen, Maxx Mamula and Travis Stokes. Those four did a great job.”

The Falcons (3-4, 1-0 CVCL) play Sacramento Country Day in a non-league game Friday.
