Falcons pull off shocker

Let’s just say the Forest Lake Christian boys basketball team is enjoying its role as Central Valley League spoiler after knocking off Victory Christian, a team that went into the game tied with Woodland Christian atop the league standings with a 11-1 record.

And what could make the 72-52 win any sweeter?

Forest Lake Christian coach David Thomas said after the upset victory that he can’t remember a Falcon team in the past 11 years that has beaten Victory Christian in a league game.

The added boost the Falcons are sure to receive in the power rankings will come as a nice parting gift as well.

Even more impressive, the win came without the Falcon’s starting center Nate Holt, who is sidelined until an MRI can be done on his injured knee.

Despite missing its big man, Forest Lake Christian was able to get Victory Christian’s 6-foot, 4-inch senior center Kyle Bertolucci in such foul trouble he was never able to establish a rhythm and eventually fouled out scoring just four points.

It was however, the Falcons’ offense that caused the Vikings the most trouble.

“Their back door cuts killed us,” Victory Christian coach Bob Grexton said. “They played very smart basketball and kept their offensive starting out high and we didn’t give much help down low. We played sloppy on defense.”

Grexton saw the game tilt in the favor of the Falcons at the end of the first half, as Forest Lake Christian (12-12, 8-5 CVCL) went into the locker room at halftime leading 31-29 after going on a 9-0 run.

Despite the change in momentum, the Falcons did not break the game open until the beginning of the fourth quarter, going on a 21-6 run that put that game away.

“I am absolutely delighted,” Thomas said. “The entire season our goal has been to beat one of the three teams in the upper echelon of the league and tonight we did it. We played with confidence down the stretch and continued to go forward at the end in all aspects of the game.”

The Falcons had four players in double digits with senior Jon Gimroth leading the way with 16 points. Senior forward Sam Metteer tallied 12 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Adam Reed and senior Kevin Farnum scored 13 and 10 points, respectively. Grant Marple, a senior, dished out 10 assists.
