Falcons fall short in NorCal

Forest Lake Christian’s girls basketball season came to an end Tuesday with a 47-40 loss at No. 2 Piedmont in the first round of the Northern California Regional Tournament.

The No. 7 Falcons were within three points in the final minute, but Piedmont hit clutch free throws as Forest Lake Christian resorted to fouling.

Each of the four Falcon seniors contributed in the loss: Taylor Kilgore led her team with 15 points, Brittany Allen scored five, MacKenzie Deneen played well defensively and Jessica Lockhart inspired her team with a pregame speech.

Sophomore Kylie Miraldi also played well on defense, grabbing 11 rebounds while scoring eight points. She held Piedmont’s star center to four points.

“We played really well,” Forest Lake Christian coach Steve Kellar said. “We were right down there at the end … the girls played maybe as hard or as tough as they played all year. We could have won that game.”

The Falcons (23-8) earned a No. 7 seed by falling to Modesto Christian in the Sac-Joaquin Section final Saturday. It was the first time in four years they weren’t section champs.

“The best thing about this is that these girls have grown up tremendously,” Kellar said. “They’ve learned to win and lose with grace and class. At the end they were crying together in the lockerroom … they were as unified as they’ve ever been in the last four years.

“They became women tonight – women of strong character.
